NOTES

On August 17, 1993 Phish returned to Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas for the second time that year. Also known as Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, the venue is a historic 3,500 capacity auditorium that hosted three Phish shows along with everything from basketball to roller derby and professional wrestling. Kansas City was the last stop before heading out to Colorado and points west for the last six shows of the tour. The band was experimenting with “Including Your Own Hey” listening exercises amidst a groundbreaking summer and the results were palpable. In Kansas City after a memorable St. Louis show (released as St. Louis ’93) Phish took just about every song for a creative ride.

Set one kicked off with Wilson > Llama, introducing the first of this show’s multiple micro-jams during Wilson and a reprise of the “Wilson” vocals in Llama. A standout Divided Sky led to the only Weigh > Maze pairing to-date followed by Fluffhead > Fast Enough For You and the then-common bluegrass spiritual Daniel Saw The Stone. Set two soared, from the must-hear 2001 > David Bowie opener (the first such combination) to The Horse played on acoustic guitar with a unique David Bowie mashup. You Enjoy Myself went deep, ending in an Ob La Di, Ob La Da vocal jam while the encore paired the unamplified a cappella Memories with Jimi Hendrix’s Fire – a reminder that summer ‘93 was packed with both.

8/17/93 Kansas City was recorded by Paul Languedoc to DAT and mastered by Fred Kevorkian.
